“I can't be a princess! I'm still waiting for normal body parts to arrive!”

The strength of The Princess Diaries is clearly in the interplay between the actors. Especially the scenes between Hathaway and Andrews stand out, but Elizondo also has a nice supporting role. Hathaway and Andrews are of course also "acting royals", and the story about princesses and the succession to the throne is made for them. The story is not very special, and the script drops a few stitches here and there. The differences are very much emphasized, and it doesn't want to be really funny. The supporting characters are also very annoying at times. Fortunately, Hathaway and Andrews still manage to make a lot of it.

Particularly superficial. You can of course count out the whole story. Ugly girl doesn't want to be a princess, gets "training", makes "hilarious" mistakes (i.e. very mediocre slapstick), turns out to be very beautiful after a makeover, is in love with the wrong boy, but still repents and chooses the good-natured guy she didn't really see before, and eventually chooses to become a princess.

This film fits right in with Disney's business model, which is (partly) based on making girls think that they (can) all be a princess, which I strongly doubt. In short, in terms of plot it is nothing, it has an extra disgust factor, cinematically it is nothing special at all. The only thing I can say is that the acting is not without merit, but is that enough to save the film from absolute ruin? Not in my eyes. 0.5*.

faint.

Hathaway this time in the kind of role she used to be so popular. I think this is also one of her youngest roles, and she has a remarkable amount of charisma in it. The problem is, she's being pushed into a role that puts her in a less charming character. Then you quickly make it difficult for yourself.

Lots of messages, silly stuff and jokes, but few that really catch on. The film is mainly a moralistic event about being rich doesn't necessarily make you happy and attracts nice people etc. We've probably all seen it before. Unfortunately, this film doesn't do that much better or worse. Rather worse, actually, because I didn't like it very much.

The environment is charming, the acting is fine and the film looks pleasant. That does not alter the fact that the playing time is particularly long to develop a concept that is no longer very original. In the first 30 minutes it's all still funny, but Marshall has to add another hour if necessary, while these kinds of stories can really be closed much earlier.

It's entertaining and lighthearted, but a movie I'll probably forget in no time. These kinds of movies mainly serve as simple things to watch on a night out, but I think in the end I'm just not really the target audience. Extra points for Hathaway herself, who used to quickly make it clear that she was a promising character.
