The Merchant of Venice plot
Bassanio, a young nobleman, borrows money through his friend Antonio to impress Portia, his dream woman. However, Antonio's capital is out at sea, so he borrows the money from Shylock, the moneylender. However, he still has some things to settle with Antonio and includes a special clause in the agreement: if Antonio does not pay back the money, Shylock is entitled to a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. Then, when reports come that Antonio's fleet is lost at sea, Shylock actually demands his pound of flesh. Based on a play by William Shakespeare from 1596.
