The Loneliest Boy in the World is an abstractly directed film that you really have to like. Director Owen uses a very subtle form of humor, which is completely at odds with the rather rustic subject. The concept of a group of undead that the protagonist must take care of and love the outside world is not really new anymore, at least not from an angle where we as viewers have to doubt the sanity of the protagonist. You can clearly see that Owen wanted "indoor" to really be Harwood's world. Lots of colours, a lot of precise camera work and a healthy dose of detail. However, he cannot control that, after a while the outside world, which should stand in front of the boring real world, starts to resemble the same inner world and vice versa. As a result, it always remains a somewhat unbalanced film that does not quite know which style to focus on exactly. In any case, mixing them together does not work, I regularly got the feeling that I was watching two different films.

Incidentally, the main reason for my low grade is that I don't like the humor at all. Too careful and uncomfortable, but also the ideas and jokes are too familiar to me to make an impression. I think I can just appreciate some crass humor more instead of focusing too much on body language and voice pitch. In addition, the film is also difficult to see as a horror film, because only the concept of zombies makes the genre designation what it is. Although the acting is above average and I really appreciated some of the stylization choices, the entertaining impression the film gave me beforehand didn't last once I watched the film. Shame.
