The Extraordinary Seaman plot

Lt. Commander Finchhaven (David Niven) is found dead drunk on his first mission during World War II. He is therefore sent out to sail around until there is a chance to regain himself. He meets four sailors, including Lieutenant Morton Krim and the cook WJ Oglethorpe. They strike a deal in which the men help Finchhaven in exchange for a trip to Australia. They recapture a village to secure some cannons.
