The Estate plot
"Where there's a will there's a war."
The ruthless Savanna and her guilty sister Macey are strapped for cash. They prey on the fortune of their terminally ill Aunt Hilda, a woman who hates everyone in the family. The sisters hope their flattery will spur Hilda to change her will in their favor. Unfortunately, they are not the only cunning relatives bent on an inheritance.

Nice film about a few cousins who all prey on the future inheritance of a family member. Thick and nicely unsympathetic characters. Not everything is equally funny, but enough entertaining developments and situations. A nice cast with David Duchovny being the funniest.

A bunch of relatives wait like a pack of vultures for their wealthy aunt's death as they do their best to win her favor in order to claim the inheritance. The screenplay offers potential for witty morbid humour. The film is also a British production and British humor suits me. The humor of self-mockery, the absurd, the sarcastic, the eccentric. You will not encounter this humor in this film. In reality, the film is bursting with toddler humor. Underpants fun. I admit that this is also a kind of humor you see in British comedies, but it's not the typical humor I'm referring to.
The movie is also very noisy and messy. These are often means that camouflage a lack of humor. The louder, the more fun. That credo certainly applies to Anna Faris. Now I rarely like her and expectations are low in that regard, but the presence of actresses like Kathleen Turner and Toni Collette should still set a certain standard. Turner plays the toxic matriarch but makes the rich aunt no more than an annoying character. Exactly what Toni Collette does with her character. What a waste of talent.
The Estate is not a good movie. To say that the film is therefore bad is going too far. Not everything about the film is boring and disappointing. The musical wallpaper is very ok and in some scenes the acting talent pops up and snatches of vicious humor are created that are quite funny. These are fragments that stand out pleasantly, but unfortunately also quickly dissolve in the large mush of flat, bland and childish humor that makes up most of the film.

No matter how hard Americans try, they remain far away from the subtlety, absurdity and self-mockery that makes English humor so powerful, even in this film. Flat and a lot of shouting. Duchovny steals the show, especially through his non-verbal actions and occasional subtle comments. Too bad there could have been so much more. A version of this with John Cleese, Terry Giliam, Eric Iddle, Joanna Lumley Hugh Laurie and French & Saunders and perhaps Smith & Jones would have seemed nice.
