Not my thing this teenage film, but I certainly don't belong to the target group anymore. However, I cannot avoid the impression that John Hughes, say, used to make teenage films in my time that had more to say in terms of content and were certainly more interesting than this dull (appropriate) screening. Thought it was a flat story, which never becomes funny, takes itself too seriously and takes too long. Prediction: no actor will participate (except perhaps the beautiful Bella Thorne) of whom we will hear something later in life.

Not the best movie I've seen. He's funny, but I think he's overdone. I get it if people like it but I don't watch it much.

Check out my review: The Duff

Ah.

Compared to similar films within this kind of settings, this film falls nicely within the level. That level isn't terribly high, but you've also seen them worse. The DUFF mainly plays with a word that Sandel invented himself, and that was so brilliant that it is stretched to 100 minutes.

The direction is safe and so is the story, but it does involve a lot of things and that certainly helps it move forward little by little. The effects of the online world as well as social media are covered while the film also continues to seek real life. That still produces a nice balance of relevant topics that alternate well with each other.

But a lot has already been said. It remains a predictable film with a lot of jokes that don't hit the mark. Actors don't really have any chemistry anywhere, although they play pretty well on their own. After a while, little is left of the smoothly edited opening, because as a director, Sandel adds too little to his own creation. Then just put him down for a third Goosebumps movie, I'd much rather see him that way.
