America, early 1930s. Partly due to the Great Depression, the playboy 'Gabby' Denton is not very successful with his career, but he is with women and he is also not averse to alcohol. Looking to change tack, Gabby takes over the garage on the ground floor of an eight-story New York City apartment building from his brother-in-law 'Beef' Evans. Unbeknownst to Gabby, on the second floor, Beef deals in stolen cars. On yet another floor of the same flat, a gang of car thieves, led by one Jenkins and his current girlfriend 'Silver', lives. Gabby is immediately mesmerized by her the first meeting with Silver and he causes an accident. Silver takes care of Gabby at her home. Complications are inevitable.
