The City of Tears plot
When Rosa Carillo loses her singing job with a bankrupt Italian opera company, she takes a job in Tony Bonchi's delicatessen rather than accept artist Billy Leeds' offer to care for her. Billy has fallen out with his model and lover Maria, with whom Rosa thinks Tony is in love. When Tony is arrested on a false charge, Rosa tells Billy she will accept his proposal if he gets Tony out of jail, but she brings Maria to the agreed-upon meeting place for safety.
