Flamboyant Scottish hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie receives an invitation to the prestigious annual hairdressing contest in Los Angeles. Documentary maker Martin Samuels travels with him. After the manager of the Century Plaza Hotel calls Crawford for exceeding his credit, he discovers that he was only invited as a guest and not as a participant. To make his country and friends proud, he moves heaven and earth to still get into the competition. He calls his compatriot Sean Connery, tries to get a club card, enlists the help of last year's winner and he helps Connery's manager get a new haircut. But is that enough to become the pride of Scotland?
