Sunny Dancer plot

Ivy is anything but thrilled when she's forced to attend a summer camp for young people affected by cancer. Ivy herself is in remission, a period she's worked hard to achieve. Her skepticism makes "Chemo Camp" both cringe-inducing and disgusting. But once she arrives, she finds unexpected friends among a group of misfits and experiences a summer she'll never forget.

The parents [James Norton, Jessica Gunning] of 17-year-old cancer survivor Ivy [Bella Ramsey] take her to a peer camp. Through her roommate [Ruby Stokes], she makes new friends, but after a misstep, camp leader Patrick [Neil Patrick Harris] forces her to have sessions with her camp psychologist [Jasmine Elcock]. This coming-of-age drama holds few substantive surprises, but the energetic, authentic acting of the group of friends is impressive, and Ramsey and Stokes, in particular, impress in the more emotional scenes. Very funny, very moving, and never sentimental. Dedicated to family members of the entire cast and crew who have passed away from cancer.

Not a high-brow movie, but simply amusing and sweet enough. A typical coming-of-age narrative and summer vibe, with the slight 'deviation' that it takes place at a summer camp for young people with cancer, and some of the characters don't have a long and rosy life ahead of them. That doesn't stop the film from trying to be mostly lighthearted and funny – the humor is often on the corny side, but sometimes genuinely funny. Bella Ramsey is great, but the supporting characters also shine at times. However, Neil Patrick Harris wasn't strictly necessary; a lesser-known actor could just as easily have played that role. I always find it hard to take him very seriously outside of *How I Met Your Mother*.

Ultimately, the film lacks the momentum to make it a truly engaging watch, and the twist at the end is predictable on the one hand, but feels needlessly depressing on the other hand to conclude this largely 'light' film.

In short, nothing new under the sun, but not every film has to reinvent the wheel, of course. Pleasant for a change.

3*.
