1963. 14-year-old Sam Callahan and his impulsive and rebellious mother Lydia (Jennifer Jason Leigh) are exiled by her wealthy father to the small town of Grovont, Wyoming. 28-year-old Lydia is more of a sister than a mother to Sam and is more concerned with having fun than raising her son. Sam is very wise for his age and often has sexually oriented daydreams about his fantasy girl (Drew Barrymore). He has little interest in his classmates until he sets his sights on the beautiful Maurey Pierce (Mischa Barton).
