Shukujo wa Nani o Wasureta Ka plot

A prosperous medicine professor, Komiya, and his bossy wife, Tokyo, have to babysit their free-spirited niece Setsoku from Osaka for a while. She is a girl who does what she pleases, such as smoking while she is still a minor. One Saturday, the professor doesn't feel like his weekly round of golf, but his wife has already prepared everything for him. He decides to leave his golf bag in the apartment of Okada, one of his students, and go to the pub with a friend of his. Setsuko runs into her uncle there and insists that he take her to a geisha house. When she gets quite tipsy, the professor calls Okada to take her home while he goes to sleep at Okada's house. His wife soon becomes suspicious when Setsuko is brought home by Okada.

Early Ozu. Somewhere you can already see some aspects of his later work, such as the content with family relationships, the rippling pace and many shots that were taken a bit lower to the ground (or from the bar). However, this film still lacks the power of that later work. Certainly the pacing is not always strong and the mix between comedy and drama does not always feel right. Well acted, nice role patterns (where that niece is free-spirited, but in the meantime demands a strong man) and also reasonably filmed. Nothing really great but some shots look nice with good use of black and white. Also nice to see how that modern niece also wears a lot of western clothing than her aunt in traditional clothing. 3.0*.
