hit and miss.

Extremely entertaining at times, rather annoying and hysterical at others. Raising Arizona is therefore unbalanced and erratic. That's a pity for a film of about one and a half hours, that should have kept the same level from start to finish.

Typical for the Coens (obviously just directed by Joel and not in duo with Ethan) some weird characters pass by, but that's just the weakness here. John Goodman and William Forsythe are sadly misplaced. Too loud, too much fuss, not funny. That doesn't really fit in the amusing, relaxed atmosphere of misunderstandings and foolish choices that is made first. Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter also carry the film. With ease.

2.5

Meh.

A Coen that is very different compared to the other work they deliver. Raising Arizona is very different from the sometimes more serious and drier tone that Coen films use. Of course I am well aware that every film of theirs is different from a practical point of view, but the better films from their career seem to have that specific tone.

This film is actually an ugly duckling, because it opts for humor that looks a bit clumsy, louder and more bombastic. Cage fits well into his role, although I find him a lot funnier when I am older than I find him here. He regularly comes across as rather silly (in the wrong way) and reminds me of an actor who is actually not quite where he wants to be.

Fortunately, the film is filled with some images that easily distinguish themselves. Camera work is positive and it gives the film a nice extra touch. Everything within the film contributes to the fairly hysterical approach and content, and that dedication is very noticeable. I can also give the film points for that, but it is also quite a task.

I can absolutely appreciate the film in certain aspects, but these kinds of comedies are usually a bit more difficult for me. It's a bit too busy and forced for me, but the story didn't really grab me either. I do give it points for some brilliantly filmed sequences that do show the Coens know what they're talking about, but that's where it ends for me.

Good film about a criminal and a police officer who get married and want a child. A smooth, entertaining and funny film. Nice characters that the cast knows how to give an even nicer interpretation. Beautiful camera work and very idiosyncratic, as befits a good Coen film. Easily 3.5 stars.
