Film about the situation at asylum seeker shelters. Script doesn't really know what it wants. It could have been a tragicomedy or a drama. But I don't actually know what it is now. However, the hopelessness of the situation is well depicted. There are enough stereotypical elements to bring a smile every now and then, such as the emergency worker in sandals-with-socks- who walks exactly over the line on the ground.

Two topics in my opinion in this film. Firstly, the unenviable position of the asylum applicants and secondly, a rather critical view of the approach to the problem, illustrated by the useless fuss with the giant Christmas tree, the diligent step - but is it efficient? - from one of the emergency workers and also the apathetic meeting at the beginning of the film and the forced party at the end.
There are certainly moving moments in the film - even one very extreme - also aggression (with multiculturalism at its core), but there is also some muted humor (language, clumsiness, small funny situations) but the latter does not outweigh the seriousness and suffering on a human level.
Quite interesting and in my opinion overall a bit underrated.

The film adaptation of Dimitri Verhulst's book came at a time when the refugee crisis in Europe was almost bursting at the seams. An ideal moment to give the refugee a face. Unfortunately, the film is quite fragmentary with some events and sketches of a number of residents of the asylum center. However, there is little story and line in the film, so everything is experienced with a certain distance. Strange humor too, which somewhat obscures the realism of the film. Certainly not bad, well acted too, but no reference for the subject, which is a shame.

It is mainly the despondency and hopelessness that eats away at a person enormously. Waiting for an answer, not knowing what tomorrow will bring... it must be horrible if you have been waiting for months for an answer, positive or negative. Professionally, I often come into contact with asylum seekers and it is that uncertainty that is killing me.
