A typical sequel in that it is weaker than its two predecessors. A wafer-thin story and a somewhat messy screenplay with a number of loose, insufficiently developed ideas are the main causes of this. Pitch Perfect 3 relies on the musical inventiveness and the chemistry between the leading actresses, because their characters no longer know how to surprise. Fortunately, this time Rebel Wilson transcends the image of the cozy fat boy, the acapella arrangements are fine (the music of the rival bands is a bit colorless) and there is a nice indirect tribute to George Michael in an acceptable finale. You won't convert non-believers with this, but fans of the series can probably live with this.

I still liked the two previous Pitch Perfect films, especially because of the catchy a cappella songs. That is much less the case with this sequel, while the filmmakers have not even bothered to weave a decent story around the music. It seems to me that this formula has still been completely exhausted.

No.

To watch three Pitch Perfects in a week is to see how a catchy film with positive and negative points in the franchise is molded into a soulless repetition of tricks and frenetic attempts to add action and depth in the third film.

Shinobi puts it really spot on: as a viewer you sometimes don't know what you are looking at. Never expected that the simple concept would one day lead to characters barely jumping off a exploding boat. Or a sad side story by Fat Amy and John Lithgow, who parodies his own role from Dexter (with an Ozzie accent).

No, it's a shame to see the series end in an identity crisis, but I think it's better for everyone if it stays at this. 1.5*
