Marasciallo Carotenuto (Vittorio De Sica) has retired from the police army and returns to his native village of Sorrento. He visits his brother Don Matteo, the local priest, and wants to move into the parental home. But that has been sublet to Donna Sofia (Sophia Loren) who refuses to leave the property.
