Mrs. Doubtfire plot

"She makes dinner. She does windows. She reads bedtime stories. She's a blessing... in disguise."

Daniel (Robin Williams) and his wife Miranda Hillard (Sally Field) are a happy couple with three children. One day they get into an argument and they decide to divorce. The children are assigned to Miranda because Daniel is moving into a new house and he needs to get everything in order first. He can see them once a week on Saturday. However, he finds this too little. Miranda is too busy with work and looking for a nanny. Daniel dresses up as an old woman and becomes the nanny of his own children. Then a series of comic events begins.

In my memory was Mrs. Doubtfire more along the lines of a Bad Grandpa, that movie where Johnny Knoxville does stunts like an old man. But surprisingly, only a small part of Mrs. Doubtfire based on physical humor. There are a few scenes where Robin Williams jumps and dances like an old lady, but the film is generally quite subdued. Like many Robin Williams comedies, part of it is heavily family drama. So in between the nonsense Williams puts on his big puppy eyes and Howard Shore's violin music volume knob gets a big turn. It sometimes gets very sweet and dramatic, but luckily director Chris Colombus keeps it mostly comical. And as a comedy, Mrs. Double fire fine.

The star of the show is of course Williams, but it is noticeable that the rest of the cast does a very good job here as well. Sally Field proves to be a very strong - and above all comedic - opponent. Pierce Brosnan is also a fine 'victim' as rich smoothjanus, but especially nice that he is not a typical unsympathetic villain. Still, the rivalry between him and Williams as an old lady is very witty. Furthermore, some of those typical 90s comedy actors in a supporting role, such as Harvey Fierstein, Anne Haney, Martin Mull and William Newman. The script of Mrs. Doubtfire is simple and effective and you can barely feel the running time of two hours, the film has a nice pace. Williams as Daniel Hillard is not that exceptional, he just plays himself; a man with all kinds of voices who can get on your nerves in the long run. It's also not hard to understand Sally Field's motivation. But Williams is excellent as the old, neat, British lady. He is honestly almost unrecognizable, not only because of the make-up, but also because his energy as a Doubtfire is a lot lower. And that is more pleasant and more sustainable than two hours watching Williams bounce ball.

3.5 stars.

What are you supposed to do with this film? He runs in all directions. It's super American and cliché. Moral bullshit and more of that kind of bla bla. A court drama about an unbelievable divorce. It is a banal farce with dressing up. He is also very funny sometimes. And then you have to cry again because false emotions have to be aroused. They have packed everything you can think of into this film. A film that also seems to have been specially written to squeeze the most out of the talents of Robin Williams. And he gets free rein in that. No, this is obviously all way too much of a good thing until it just explodes. The film completely misses the point. But yes, he also looks nice and the story itself is also quite original and funny. And besides, it is a pleasure to see Robin Williams at work and to see what he can do. So yeah, I can't give this film a fail. I would actually prefer to see a European version of this film. A film that does not explore all the limits of the inadmissible, but that simply has integrity and vision. Perhaps a European remake of this film has already been made. Or even better; this film is a poor remake of a much better European original. Then I would really have something to look forward to. It is always a shame to see how the Americans manage to ruin something potentially beautiful.
