Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War plot
Thelma feels trapped in her marriage and in her mind she has already done bad things to her husband, which she will never carry out. Then fate lends her a hand when a cricket ball puts an end to her husband's life. The environment thinks she is very affected, but she wants to fully enjoy his absence. However, her son is in need of money and decides that it is better if his mother is placed in a rest home. The rest home has a pungent smell of cabbage, activities are not stimulated and all residents are drugged so as not to be a nuisance. She feels that she is once again a prisoner.
