Publisher Gerald P. North returns to New York after a short business trip to Boston. Gerald stops at the apartment of a friend, inventor Louis Berex, during the trip. Unbeknownst to him, his friend has meanwhile been in a relationship with married Carol. Mrs. North, Gerald's wife, tries to mediate between Carol and her husband to speed up a possible divorce. But then a murder is committed.
