According to Jewish belief, from birth a Jew is accompanied by two angels: the angel of light and the angel of darkness. After the death, a seven-day mourning period, the shivah, follows, in which the relatives list the merits and shortcomings of the deceased. In this way it is calculated which angel will accompany the deceased to the afterlife. When 75-year-old Moishe dies during a lavish mariachi feast, the angels seem to be able to leave their calculator in their pocket, as everything points to a one-way ride into darkness. Not only did the deceased lead a debauched life, but the bereaved—Moishe's embittered daughter, his bankrupt son, an Orthodox grandson, and his Catholic mistress—have little good to say about the dearly departed. Yet the shivah turns out to have several surprises in store...
