Meskina plot

"Write your own fairytale."

Leyla has no husband, no child, no clear career path and is therefore labeled as 'Meskina'; pathetic. She tries to hear her own voice among the clamorous opinions around her and find out who she is, what she wants and what actually makes her happy. During this quest she gets into quite a bit of trouble and ends up in hilarious and recognizable situations.

Smooth comedy, amply filled with Moroccan self-mockery. Then again lame, then again over the top. Overall, an enjoyable film with the talented Maryam Hassouni in a convincing lead role. What a shame, I thought afterwards, that she makes so few films.

Actually just a film by Johan Nijenhuis, but a Moroccan version. At times a bit more sympathetic and with less of a disturbing factor, but otherwise just so overdone in terms of content that it never really fascinates and sometimes verges on the kitschy visually (while there is a lot of beautiful things you can do with all those colors). Hassouni is still doing reasonably well and Dchar is also okay, but it is not all that special. 2.0*.

After her marriage to pop star Abdelkarim [Olaf Ait Tami] broke up after more than four years, Leyla [Maryam Hassouni] is back to square one and the 'meskina' (soul soul) of the family. And so both her mother Najat [Rachida Iaallala] and her sister Amira [Soundos El Ahmadi] try to set her up with a new guy. Najat couples Leyla with Amin [Nasrdin Dchar], a decent, sympathetic Moroccan Dutchman and Amira brings her into contact with Fabian [Vincent Banic], a sympathetic millionaire. Leyla's choice is complicated when Abdelkarim reappears and tries to win her back. Entertaining romantic comedy with a Dutch-Moroccan cast is predictable and has a cringeworthy ending, but Hassouni is a charming heroine and benefits from a great supporting cast and a healthy dose of self-mockery with regard to both Dutch and Moroccan cultural elements. Iaallala and El Ahmadi are hilarious as mother and sister and Nora Akachar and Selma Chadid steal every scene they are in as the two aunts.
