In Chicago, showgirl Maisie Ravier loses her job when her knife-throwing partner, Professor Orco, becomes inconsolable over his recent romantic failure and Maisie is nearly killed onstage. First, she takes a new job as a building manager's assistant. Later she runs into Hap Hixby who will help her overcome his stage fright. They start working together and after a few weeks they can give their first performance. However, Hap's stage fright is not over yet and he is standing stock-still on stage. After Maisie talks Hap out of his mind to return to his hometown, they are both offered a job by Denningham, the owner of a company that sells bottled water. They take the offer, unaware that Denningham is an impostor.
