Mediocre.

Burlesque with men, that's how this movie was sold to me. Not exactly something I'm passionate about, but Soderbergh is someone I enjoy following with great pleasure. So just set it up.

Plot is indeed as flat as anything. The male stripper world could still be fascinating in itself, but the drama that is purified is one lump of cliché. The young novice, the slick routine whose trust is crumbling and an unnecessary romance that no one wants.

Like The One Ring, I'm a little bit scared of some "men" here. I understand that the dance scenes mainly appeal to women and gay guys, it is only logical that as a straight man it is a far from your bed, but as a guy you should also be able to watch this without feeling uncomfortable, I think? That overly prudish feminist swagger usually gives you the creeps, but if you're a guy who already feels uncomfortable with a naked man's ass, think twice about how women must feel all day long.

To bring out the Burlesque comparison: the acting here is clearly better and Soderbergh has much more visual flair, which makes the film look quite nice, but it doesn't really help. It's all a bit soulless and too tried.

2.0*

"What can we do in seven hours?"

Well then, it really happened. After no less than ten failed attempts. The first movie I really like from Steven Soderbergh is one about male strippers. Somehow I always had hopes that I would see another good film by the best man.

Although that is not only thanks to Soderbergh, but also to Tatum who shows just a little more here (literally) than we are used to from him so far. And actually the entire cast is nice to watch. Although I would have liked to see some roles developed a bit more and those are some more members of the club. It is of course the story of Mike, The Kid and also a bit of Brooke. But the team's relationship now seemed a little less convincing. And what a hero McConaughey is. He really goes wild in the last scenes.

The performances are also very nice. I was able to laugh now and then, especially the somewhat clumsy part of the performances. And then there is the music that is used. It was nice to hear "Pony" again. Further entanglements are also fine, although I'm not quite ready for Soderbergh's style of storytelling yet. But here already a lot better than what I've seen from this director so far. Cinematography is fun every now and then.

As a man I was able to enjoy this very much and I am certainly not ashamed to admit that. But not only are the men well represented, but the women certainly stand their ground. Olivia Munn, Cody Horn and certainly the beautiful Riley Keough stands out in a positive way in her small role.

Very much enjoyed Magic Mike. A wonderful feel good movie.

Oh yeah, and that penis pump.... I couldn't regain consciousness. Totally unexpected moment.

Magic Mike [Channing Tatum] is the star of a comic show but hopes to start his own custom furniture business soon. But banks aren't willing to lend him enough money, and Mike's boss Dallas [Matthew McCounaghey] promises him and his colleagues a golden future in Miami. Soderberg sees the stripper world through the eyes of Adam [Alex Pettyfer], a naive young man who takes his first steps as a stripper thanks to Mike. Soderbergh wanted actors who can improvise and this feels like a collection of improvised scenes without a clear storyline with a regular striptease to interrupt the quickly set boredom. Those shows were performed with conviction and enthusiasm, though.
