Josette tells her godfather, an inveterate bachelor, on the night of her engagement that she loves Joe, an American who travels the world, but that she is forced to marry a pathetic idiot because she has to marry before 20 to to earn a great inheritance. The godfather agrees to marry her for the time being without making love to her until the third person shows up.
