"It's the same two dudes from "Uptown Saturday Night"...but this time they're back with kid dyn-o-mite!"
Clyde Williams and Billy Foster are a couple of workers in Atlanta who have promised to raise money for their church community, the Brothers and Sisters of Shaka. However, their way of raising money means they travel to New Orleans and manipulate a boxing match. Using hypnosis, they turn the pathetic underdog into a fighting machine. They bet on him, he wins with ease, and they go back to Atlanta with the money. All goes well until the mobsters who organized the boxing contest find out that they were cops.

Bill Cosby is clearly less conservative here than in his TV show, while the restrained Poitier provides the balance.
The film can almost be called a parody of Blaxploitation [with emphasis on exploitation].
Cosby, Poitier, and their wives are the only figures who can be called somewhat 'realistic' in an all-black cast, given the time period.
So that means the rest of the figures consist of fly dressed, slick talking badasses. Truly the black stereotype from any blaxploitation whatsoever.
But Poitier manages to convey a positive message, despite his hard-working characters ending up in a precarious situation when they are hunted down by the badasses.
That optimism is, incidentally, beautifully present in the brilliant soundtrack of Mayfield, with vocals by the Staple Singers.

A mediocre film about two friends who come up with a plan to quickly earn money for the church. The pace isn't exactly high, and there are also some scenes that are unnecessary given the already simple plot. The cast does a decent job, but time hasn't done this comedy much good.
