Les Grandes Manoeuvres plot
A lieutenant of an army unit stationed in a provincial town makes a bet on seducing a randomly chosen "virtuous" woman. He succeeds, but he really falls in love with her. Everything seems to be going well until she finds out about the bet.

A 100% studio-shot romantic film that features charmer Philippe alongside established star Michèle Morgan and young bombshell Brigitte Bardot. Interesting for its crystal-clear bourgeois conversations and certainly for its costumes and, above all, the sets.

A thoroughly charming film, for which director/writer René Clair seemingly pulled out a can of beautiful women; the female crème de la crème of French cinema in the mid-1950s: Michèle Morgan, Magali Noël, Dany Carrel, Simone Valère, and last but not least, the still-young Brigitte Bardot (before she made a name for herself as a sex symbol). Add to that Gérard Philipe in a leading role very familiar to him, and you have an entertaining romantic comedy. In my opinion, one of the best films in René Clair's varied oeuvre.

Back to a supporting role that is only credited 'avec' on the second page – a small cameo for BB in this film. But it is a color film again, albeit in that period-correct Technicolor where the red is far too red.
What spoils the film for me a bit is that Philippe and Robert look quite alike with that thin moustache – and they both also look quite a bit like one of my French acquaintances, whom I’ve even given the code name 'Daffy Duck' somewhere in the back of my mind.
As for the story, the film is torture; the plot never becomes interesting. If only they had put the same amount of effort into fleshing out the characters so that you could empathize a little—but no, that hadn't been discovered yet back then.
BB has a minuscule role – she had already been somewhat 'discovered', but hadn't really made a name for herself yet. And the film is certainly not about her, or about her character.
Just about the only thing the film offers me are the few outdoor shots, from which you get a bit of a sense of the atmosphere of the time. Otherwise, I found it absolutely not worth the effort.
