When the village baker Walter Laible returns early from his well-deserved long vacation, his wife Marga and his son Florian await him with bad news. They had to sell the house and bakery during his absence, because they could no longer pay their debts. And that to Walter's nemesis and his biggest competitor, the industrial baker Manfred Frisch. While Walter is exhausted, Manfred relishes his victory. It soon turns out that he was happy too soon, because even Manfred loses his entire business. There's a chance to get it all back, but for that Manfred needs Walter's help.
