Kratt plot

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions"

The children Mia and Kevin have to spend a few weeks on their grandmother's farm so that their parents can attend a self-help retreat. For them, it's the end of the world: there's nothing to do, they don't have smartphones and they have to do chores all the time. When Mia and Kevin hear the legend of Kratt, a demonic creature who must always be busy, they think they are doing themselves and their grandmother a favor by summoning the creature. The kids have no idea they may have started the end of the world with Kratt's return...

Director Rasmus Merivoo bases his horror debut on the Estonian legend of the same name. This mythological creature can be assembled using household objects and three drops of blood. The idea is that you give the Kratt tasks that it will have to perform, but if those tasks run out, you are in danger of death. An interesting concept, but executed in an exceptionally messy way by Merivoo. The problem is that Kratt shoots in all directions and keeps switching between characters and side tracks, so that the event never forms a coherent whole. Despite the fact that the film starts childishly, after a while Merivoo approaches almost exclusively adult topics and even enters political and socially critical paths that add zero point zero to the story. When it comes to horror, Kratt (the film as well as the creature) lacks creativity. Nowhere is the smooth or entertaining balance that Merivoo is clearly looking for achieved, which means that as a viewer I cannot make sense of it. Bonus points for the original design as well as professional set construction.
