After his military service in the Pacific, Dorian "Dodo" Doubleday has returned home and resumed his old job at the newspaper. Dodo's girlfriend, Penny Blake, is determined that her father, the newspaper's editor-in-chief, promotes Dodo to a job with a salary they can marry. However, her father, "Windy" Blake, hates Dodo and wants Penny to marry someone of her own social standing. After a quarter of the newspaper's police reporters are beaten up by gangsters and leave town, Windy sees the solution to his problems in promoting Dodo to police reporter.
