During the rebuilding of South Korea, one day in 1953, the popcorn seller Ok-ran appears at the construction site where the humble, shy and destitute construction worker Sam-gwan works. Sam-gwan has never seen such a beautiful woman and he falls in love instantly. He decides to marry her, although she is dating the playboy So-yong. Like many men around him, Sam-gwan sells his blood to earn money for the marriage. Eleven years later, he and Ok-ran have three children. To Sam-gwan's dismay, persistent rumors prove true that his eldest son is the child of his wife's former boyfriend…
