Hello, Dolly! plot

"Come anytime for the time of your life!"

New York, 1890. The cheerful Dorothy Levi is a first-class matchmaker. She herself has set her sights on the rich but very stingy merchant Horace Vandergelder, who lives in nearby Yonkers. Vandergelder has asked Levi to come to protect his niece Emmengarde from a misstep. Emmengarde wants to marry the artist Ambrose Kemper. As a true merchant, Horace has nothing but contempt for the artist, because art does not bring in money. Horace himself is about to go to New York to propose to Irene Molloy. Horace leaves his two bumbling servants Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker to look after the case. Because Dorothy wants to hook up the wealthy Horace herself, she makes sure that Cornelius and Barnaby also go to Irene Molloy's shop, without Horace knowing of course...

A musical that lives up to its name because it is packed with song and dance numbers, some of which are very successful (how could it be otherwise with Gene Kelly as director).

We may not be able to count on wonderful melodies from Berlin, Gershwin, Cole Porter or Kern, but that is made up for by the wonderful voice of Babra Streisand, Walter Matthau, funny when he's angry, and Satchmo, who had long since exchanged his jazz roots for jazzy pop.

Ultimately charming in its premise and of course to be appreciated for the sets and costuming.

Reasonable film about a successful matchmaker who is looking for a wife for a merchant. An old-fashioned, grandly conceived Hollywood musical. A thin story that is only sporadically entertaining. Beautiful costumes and sets and also a number of fine dance scenes. A lot shorter and it could have been 3.5 stars.

Gene Kelly in the director's chair goes all out with lavish decors, beautiful locations and a mountain of extras to give shape to New York at the end of the 19th century. Furthermore, his focus is, not unexpectedly, on the singing and dancing and he sometimes drops the ball to integrate the story well and keep it interesting.

Barbra Streisand is the only one who really comes across well, just like in her other musicals from that time. Matthau is an expected miscast and Crawford is a bit too silly for me, although that of course fits in this whole.

All in all definitely worth a watch at the right time. Playing time is really long, but apparently all those musicals have that.
