Haikei Tenno Heika Sama plot

Shosuke, a young man of poor descent from a village, enlists in the military. He is eager to learn to read and write. Then his military service comes to an end, but Shosuke doesn't want to leave the service. He decides to write a letter to the emperor in which he asks whether he can continue to serve a little longer.
