During the Independence Day celebrations in 1910, Ben Young (Beau Bridges) decides to seek his fortune elsewhere, and heads to Chicago. Once in Chicago, his money is stolen and he faints from hunger. He is rescued by the brothel keeper Queen Lil (Melina Mecouri), who takes him to her brothel. He may continue to live there. She also lands him a job at the Chicago Journal, where he meets editor Francis X. Sullivan (Brian Keith), who introduces him to the life of political journalism.
