Reese Witherspoon portrays a headstrong, very irritating figure in a very convincing way. Actually, that's the most positive thing about this film, which drags on a bit without many highs or lows, with the exception of the ending, which I found weak and not very inventive.

“Some people say I'm an overachiever, but I think they're just jealous.”

Strong movie. Election is set in and around a High School, but for the rest it has everything to do with a sharp and cynical political satire. Director Alexander Payne is a master at fleshing out characters and their character traits, feelings and motivations.

Also in Election, Payne once again puts his characters under a magnifying glass (or hatchet), and shows what reprehensible actions they are capable of. Broderick is very strong as the dopey teacher McAllister, but Witherspoon steals the show as the overambitious Tracy Flick. What a lovely character Witherspoon portrays here, and with Tracy you really build a love-hate relationship as the film progresses. I also thought Jessica Campbell was very strong and Tammy is probably the nicest character in the film. The film has a very light-hearted and humorous tone, but appearances can be deceiving. Beneath the surface is a sharp message full of cynicism, irony and certainly hypocrisy. Enjoy charging!

Funny, enjoyable and very substantive for a comedy.

Human traits, denounced or believed, occupy a very important place.
