After having seen a Flight of Whimbrel before, I became curious how Ate did in America and I must honestly say that he is also very good at this.

Phoebe Cates is a character you can easily fall in love with and Rik Mayall portrays his character in a cartoonish way, sometimes a tad annoying but that is also the intention of his role.

The slightly later The Mask seems to have taken some inspiration from this.

A great viewer, nothing more, but certainly nothing less.

3*

This film has a pretty heavy core that gradually reveals itself. It's about a girl who is emotionally neglected in her youth, to the point of physical abuse (when she is tied to her bed in flashback). A fantasy film in which the fantasy in the finale turns out to have a moment of instant therapeutic effect, and Phoebe Cates is able to free herself from her childhood trauma. And allows her to then deal with the issues in her adult life (being her adulterous partner and narcissistic mother). So that's a strong message.

At the other end of the spectrum, in this film, we're dealing with incredibly bland humor, which is pretty lethal for a comedy. It doesn't work for me at all, it's just not funny, except for three moments. I watched this film primarily because of the presence of Rik Mayall, whose comedy series I love, but this one is a huge stinker to me. Small consolation that he himself did not co-write this dragon, and that it is not at all due to his performance. It couldn't have been better. Overall, the film fails to achieve its goal: comedy. Most of the so-called gags irritated me.

As a little girl, Elizabeth had an imaginary boyfriend who played all kinds of naughty pranks. At a later age, that boyfriend comes back. That boyfriend's role is played by Rik Mayall, and he was the main reason I wanted to see the movie. But afterwards I mainly keep the thought; why actually? In the Young ones Rik was still great and in the new statesman and bottom he was also fun. But gradually he became an annoying caricature of himself. And he is in this movie too. He's really not nice anymore. What I also really like about this film is that it is super American. With a very American cliché story, predictability and structure. But a very British protagonist has been chosen and Ate de Jong is a well-known Dutch director. A striking combination, which probably did not contribute much to a great success for this film.
