Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood plot

"Finally, the movie that proves that Justice isn't always Poetic, Jungle Fever isn't always pretty, and Higher Learning can be a waste of time."

Ashtray returns to where he grew up, where he reunites with his father and friends. It doesn't really add up, as Ashtray is older than his father and his best friend Loc Dog's grandmother is a trigger-happy old woman. The film is a parody of the "hood" films such as Menace II Society and Boyz N The Hood.

It doesn't get much nicer than the title, and that's not a very successful joke either. I've never seen a full movie of The Wayans Brothers before, mainly because what I do know about them was pretty bland. And rightly so: it's hardly a cohesive film, and this series of skits and parodies of scenes from the Hood classics (and films that fall short of classic status) are only very rarely funny. Usually it's really not funny, and that exaggerated fuss of everyone started to dislike me more and more. This bolt movie will probably remain my last Wayans for a while.

So parody.

I'm always up for a parody movie, although most of them are really bland. With the (3) Wayans in this film it will also go in that direction, but luckily this sometimes turned out to be surprisingly funny. The level is of course questionable, but ultimately a windfall.

The Wayans themselves weren't even that funny, especially Marlon was just so over the top that it wasn't fun anymore. Normally I think he's ok, but when he gets too crazy he's a bit less. His brother Shawn was a bit more fun, mainly because he was a bit more normal and therefore a bit more fun.

But the really comedic moments are mostly the moments that come out of nowhere, had a good laugh when Shawn Wayans entered the house and in an emotional mood accidentally knocked the 7 children down. And there are several moments in it that were very nice.

That made it all quite easy to watch, although this was clearly made with less budget than other, more popular parody films. This makes some scenes quite amateurish, but you do see the love for parody by the Wayans brothers here.

But the screaming conversations and sex jokes could still be a bit less, it's mainly the moments that come out of nowhere and genuinely poke fun at other movies that are really fun. The rest I believe too, and for a film that only makes jokes I didn't really laugh at this.

Nice for once I say.

This is one of those comedy that I used to think was very witty, but now there's not much left of it. A single joke still made me smile, but the film relies too much on crazy faces and weird dances and less on sharp satire or fun parody. You must find the idea of "an old grandma smoking a joint and swearing" very funny, because that's mainly the level of humor. As the title suggests, the Wayans brothers seem to have seen a few movies and want to make fun of them. And just as the names of those films have flickered in the title, so the scenes seem to have been thrown into the script as well. In that respect, Don't Be A Menace… is basically a sketch show. Which is okay, as long as the skits are a little funny. And they are not here.

2 stars.
