Dogs: The Rise and Fall of an All-Girl Bookie Joint plot

Leila is 28 years old, sexy and a bit strange. Her roommates are Amina, a black, outspoken young lady, and Stephanie, with a dry humor and embroiled in a slow divorce. All three are hopelessly unemployed. Leila's mother just passed away. In order to pay the rent, they take in a fourth: the well-meaning Gypsy who forgets to report that she has been released on parole pending a prison term. Then there's the quiet, white Arnie, head over heels in love with Amina. He enlists the help of his brother Sammy, a bookmaker, to help them with job applications. Sammy is emotionally the least accessible man on the planet. Immediately obsessed with his job, Leila also commits the other girls to an entirely new form of making money: crime. The girls study sports betting and learn that the winning teams are called 'favorites' and the losers 'dogs'. The girls open a gambling center in their kitchen.
