The almost 40-year-old sculptor Herbert Kemmel is taciturn and closed, his work should speak for itself. He lives in a village on the outskirts of Berlin with his wife Gisi and son Michael. When he works in his studio, he forgets everything around him and his family loses out. His neighbors want to visit, but most react uncertainly to Kemmel's art or his thoughts on the war, which he experienced firsthand. The farmers' wives, who come to assess the design of an art object, don't know what to do with him either. Before the official unveiling of the object, they ask Kemmel to give a speech...
