Polly Milton, the impoverished relative of a wealthy 19th-century Boston family, leaves home to earn money for the family. This is not the usual norm for her gender and social status. But instead of accepting financial support from her relatives, Polly chooses to support herself as a music teacher. She is misunderstood by virtually everyone she meets, but seems to find true love when she meets businessman Mr. meets Sydney.
