The Front Runner is about the rise and fall of American politician Gary Hart. Senator Gary Hart is considered to be the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988. But after revelations of an extramarital affair with actress Donna Rice, Hart drops out of the race, with Michael Dukakis winning the Democratic nomination for president. Dukakis is defeated in the election by George HW Bush.
