The Boys in the Boat plot

At the beginning of the twentieth century, rowing was one of the most popular and acclaimed sports. As the United States grapples with a global economic crisis in the 1930s, a group of brave, fit boys decide to represent their country at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. The boys, led by Joe Rantz, have to compete against elite candidates from all over the world. For the underprivileged youth, their team is the only chance to stay in college.

Old-fashioned Depression drama in the good sense of the word about the 10 students at the University of Washington who, as juniors, were part of the 'Washington Huskies' rowing team in 1936. The center of the story is Joe Rantz [Callum Turner], who, after a period of poverty, is happy that he is assured of a steady income as a team member. He symbolizes the entire team that must first compete against the richer and better financed arch-rivals and try to qualify for the Olympic Games in Berlin. Follows Joe's personal development through his father [Alec Newman], head coach Al Ulbrickson [Joel Edgerton], boat builder George Pocock [Peter Guiness] and love interest Joyce [Hadley Robinson]. The scenes with Turner and Pocock are moving and Clooney and cinematographer Martin Ruhe [Control, The American] deserve praise for the reconstructions of the boat races, especially those in the super exciting finale.

Rowing? Buoy! It all looks good and the cast plays just fine, but the subject, competitive rowing, is just not that interesting to me. The story surrounding it, romance and some personal drama, is also not that special. A fairly standard sports film, about a not very interesting sport, with an unsurprising ending. Not even the best cast can change that.

Winning a gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin must have made such an impression on George Clooney that he thought it was worth making a film about. However, I was unable to discover anything special about this film about team building. The fact that I have nothing to do with rowing doesn't help either.
