I didn't see this film coming, but an artist like Aznavour obviously deserves his own biopic. The fact that the film came out this year is also special. He was born 100 years ago (1924) and what better way to celebrate (commemorate) him than with his own film.

Monsieur Aznavour has become a beautiful warm film. Even more than in many other biopics, the music is central and we see the influences on his songs. The struggle and willpower to become big, with the sacrifices he had to make for it. The strength of the film is therefore at the beginning of the film, although the film can hold on to that long enough. Towards the end we come to the phase in which he is famous. That is of course logical, but in itself less interesting than the run-up to that success. With various other artists who also appear in the picture. From Trenet and Piaff to Sinatra and Johnny Hallyday.

Tahar Rahim in the title role immediately puts his career back on track after his role in Madame Web. It is a beautiful film with a fascinating zeitgeist. A must for fans and an ideal way to get to know him for those who know less about Aznavour.

Lots of music, but no depth in the Wikipedia biography of one of France's cultural icons of the 20th century. Rahim does a creditable imitation of Aznavour, but the most important life events are rushed through. The influence of the Armenian culture he grew up with, the Second World War, his collaboration with Pierre Roch and later Édith Piaf and his love affairs are all discussed, but the directors (who also wrote the screenplay) apparently thought it was a good idea to let as many songs by Charles Aznavour pass by as possible. That's what Spotify was invented for, guys! We go to the cinema for an interesting story and that is not the case.

I fully agree with the words of mrklm. There is simply no common thread. There is not even a satisfying ending to be found. The film simply stops, informs us that Aznavour died in 2018, but has no dramatic tension arc whatsoever. Monsieur Aznavour was made purely for the greater honor and glory of the subject, and sloppily at that.

Read my review here.
