Jaroslaw Dąbrowski, not to be confused with Jan Henryk Dąbrowski, namesake of the Polish national anthem, was the leader of the Red faction during the January Uprising of 1863 and army commander of the Paris Commune in 1871. So few obstacles as far as communist censorship is concerned for director Bohdan Poreba. Although the attack on the Tsarist envoy Lüdens was committed by a nationalist Polish rebel, the attention remains on Jaroslaw Dąbrowski. A bit flatly portrayed by actor Zygmunt Malanowicz, I must say. The decor switch to Paris makes it a little more exciting. The barricades look realistic and you almost feel like you are in revolutionary Paris. The Austerlitz Column, the Colonne Vendôme that was demolished after the siege by the French troops, has even been recreated especially for the film.

Jaroslaw Dąbrowski was one of the few in the Commune with military experience and was therefore able to take over command quite easily. Despite the Parisian distrust, he died heroically in armor still appalled by the suspicions that were still circulating. The confusion caused by the French conjugation of his name Jaroslav Dombrowski with which he registered for the Council of the Commune caused some confusion after his death. The portrait of the pianist Henri Dombrowski was unfortunately used for many images on monuments in memory of Jaroslaw Dąbrowski.
