Went today with our 8-year-old daughter. We actually visit almost all Disney (and Pixar) films in the cinema. But I also found this one disappointing, to be honest... I had the feeling as if I was watching an upgraded film from the 80s... not much of a spectacle in the colors or in the details, as I really liked about it. Viana for example. All in all, a dull, gray film with a song every 5-10 minutes (some were quite nice, by the way). The story was also very simple and there was little adventure or excitement. And then I also miss the "adult" humor that can make an animated film fun for the parents who often go to the cinema... Too bad, I have the feeling that after Rapunzel, Luca and Viana I have little better animation. I've seen films and Wish really can't match this unfortunately..

2 stars for the only bright spot in the film, the star himself

After a number of mediocre remakes, Disney celebrates its 100th anniversary with a failed attempt at telling an original story. Rosas is an island in the Mediterranean where everyone is welcome. Asha [Ariana DeBose] will soon turn 18, and that's when she can "turn in" (and forget) her wish to Regent Magnifico [Chris Pine], who keeps the wishes of all adult residents and holds a ceremony every six months where some of those wishes come true. Asha applies to Magnifico to become his pupil, but realizes that it is not good at all for people to forget their wishes. One moment Asha is singing a dubious love duet with Magnifico, the next she is at war and calls on her friends (and a magical star) to free the wishes. Contains a number of somewhat overproduced, but excellently sung songs, although it is not always clear what they have to do with the story. The central message about being yourself, holding on to your dreams and that anything is possible in life is as corny as the humor. Uninspired animation proves that Disney is longing for a new impetus. The end credits feature constellations of characters from a time when Disney magic was still alive and kicking. Let's all wish that some of that magic will return someday.

Disney has already all but squeezed out some of the franchises they've acquired. But there are still the Disney animated films. And I'm not talking about the soulless live action reboots, but their real animated feature films. Not all that good, but they had made some better films with Encanto and Raya and the last dragon. Wish plays it safe with the known formula. Visually it is beautiful, but not that special. I like the music in this movie. Pretty nice songs!

Wish is primarily a nostalgic blanket to celebrate 100 years of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Fortunately without it being a forced compilation or a best off. You do see a lot of winks in this film, both in the story, the music and the animation. Wish will therefore feel familiar to Disney fans. But at the same time it doesn't do anything special. I enjoyed the film, but it is not a top film.
