In the 1940s, after the Spanish Civil War, many of the Republicans defeated by Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces sought refuge in the mountains bordering northern Portugal. Some saw them as bandits, others welcomed them and helped them behind António de Oliveira Salazar's back. They were... the bandits.
