When I saw the trailer in the cinema, I wasn't thrilled at all.. But it's Disney, so that will definitely be a visit to the cinema..

So today I did it and I really didn't expect to like it so much. Laughed and moved a few times. Some pieces were also visually beautiful.

Excited to leave the cinema

Same story.

Technically, there are some positives here and there, as is often the case with the latest Pixar. Here it is mainly the physics, but also the materials that stand out. With a knitted sweater you no longer have the feeling that you are looking at a texture, but at a real woolen thing. It makes the world feel a little warmer. Unfortunately, it contributes little to the art style, which still exudes the same Pixar ugliness.

Furthermore, the classic Pixar formula (a world of opposites - fantasy in a modern setting - and a main character who feels out of place there). And that in a very light-hearted way, with also some "mature" themes, which are never treated in a mature way. Makes sure that you are still watching a fairly childish movie.

I also didn't understand much about some specific choices. That's how you get some 80s Jack Black rock kid in a classic A-Team like, what's an old-fashioned character doing in a movie like this? And if some "rock" music is then turned on, is it some cinematic pop variant of 80s hard rock, a genre that itself sounds as commercial as what? Pixar is really trying to get a very sharp edge.

Plus the usual critiques. The characters are real chamois, the humor is absolutely not funny and the drama is extremely corny. Emotional impact is therefore completely absent, despite the fact that quite a bit of time is invested in it.

Nah, it really doesn't get any better.

1.0*

Nice, but not masterful animation film neatly follows the familiar, popular formula of Disney/Pixar, but suffers from a large degree of déjà vu. Tom Holland and Chris Pratt deliver fine voice acting as two elf brothers, who discover a magical way that would allow them to see their dead father one more time. Ian [Holland] is the timid younger brother who never knew his father and Barley [Pratt] is the enthusiastic, boisterous older brother who has at least a few memories of his father. Their magical mission is a framework for all kinds of magical events and encounters with amusing characters in the magical world in which they inhabit. In short: a confused collection of loose ideas, but the central message about the importance of family has been worked out with integrity and, despite the story-technical shortcomings of this film, still leads to a moving final chord.
