El Siglo del Viento plot
The Uruguayan writer and journalist Eduardo Galeano (1940), who is the author of the book of the same name, was banned from his country for a long time to prevent his idiosyncratic and critical writing style from gaining too much fame. His style, which combines dry facts about the exploitation, oppression and violence in South America with individual anecdotes and literary creativity, is preserved in the documentary that Fernando Birri made based on the book. 'Chapters', each dealing with a specific period in the history of this century, paint a picture of a continent that is constantly ravaged by setbacks and misery. A continent that is in danger of perishing, but where people keep rising to fight against injustice and poverty.
