In the 1920s, explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashes an ancient evil. After a two-decade hiatus, he returns to Gotham City as Batman. Logical and scientifically driven, he must take on Lovecraftian, supernatural forces that threaten the very existence of Gotham. Along the way, Batman is aided and confronted by revamped versions of his familiar allies and foes, including Green Arrow, Ra's al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face and James Gordon.

A strange, sinister discovery in the Arctic makes Bruce Wayne [David Giuntoli] decide to return to Gotham City for the first time in 20 years. The murder of Harbor Master Lucius Fox [Tim Russ] confirms that the city is in grave danger. It all has to do with the Testament of Ghul, with which a dark force can be brought to life. And yes, the death of Bruce's parents also comes along again. As part of diversity, Kai Li [Tati Gabrielle] and Sanjay [Karan Brar] have been added to Batman's entourage and a colorful roster of villains and monsters pass by. A great addition to the series of full-length animated films that DC should be able to continue for a few more years.

My first reaction after seeing this movie: "WTF did I just watch?"
"The Doom That Came to Gotham" had potential to be a compelling addition to the DC animated film series, especially starring Batman. Unfortunately, despite expectations, the film fails to live up to the high standard fans have come to expect from DC animated films.
Normally I find it fun and interesting when they take a different path with an alternate Batman in a different timeline or setting and do something different with the usual story, but the biggest stumbling block of the film is the disappointing story. Despite Batman's presence, the story doesn't come into its own and fails to capture the essence of a Batman movie. The film seems to get bogged down in soaring magical and satanic elements that don't fit well with the signature Batman universe. They do exist in that universe in some interpretations of Batman, but never with as much focus on them. This departure from Batman's familiar tone and style comes across as a major misstep.
Sadly a disappointing miss for Batman fans and DC animation aficionados alike. The weak story, the inappropriate themes make it a film that you better skip. If you're looking for high-quality Batman DC animated movies, there are definitely better options out there. This didn't feel like a Batman movie at all.
