A Bug's Life plot

"An epic presentation of miniature proportions."

Every year a group of grasshoppers comes to the anthill to eat the food the ants have collected for them. One day, when the preparations for this sacrifice have just been completed, Flik accidentally throws the entire sacrifice into the river. The grasshoppers give the ants a second chance. Flik looks for other insects to join the fight against the locusts, but he returns with a circus crew. Loosely based on Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai".

Pleasantly surprised, as I'm quite easy to fall for old computer-generated animated films. Not that A Bug's Life looks so unbelievably sleek now, but it is by no means ugly. This easily beats an Ice Age. And then you also have interesting characters walking around. God, how I laughed at the sometimes very macabre humor! Mosquitoes ordering a bloody mary or a comment like: 'Now you made the maggots cry!'. The story is indeed a bit like Seven Samurai, but I only noticed that late. The best part was the flea circus. Very cool how the makers have exploited certain properties or myths surrounding certain insects. That made the whole recognizable and humorous. The ants themselves are a bit on the flat side, although no child will mind.

A nice family film that was released 1 month after Antz (1998).

Robert De Niro was approached to record Hopper's voice, but declined several times. John Lasseter and Kevin Spacey ran into each other at the Academy Awards. In Lasseter's eyes, Spacey was the right candidate for the role of Hopper. Together with actor Denis Leary this became their 2nd joint film after The Ref (1994). Actress Ashley Tisdale also auditioned, but did not qualify. This is also the last film with Roddy McDowall. He died on October 3, 1998 at the age of 70. The American singer and composer Randy Newman reused a number of tracks from James and the Giant Peach (1996). Remarkably enough, talking beetles also pass by in this film.

The film became a success for Pixar. It contains enough ingredients for a fun family film that is suitable for young and old. A nice detail is that Pixar made use of outtakes for the first time.

3.5 *

A film that mainly excels visually. The entire colorful work, which is already 20 years old, still looks more than fine. Unfortunately, A Bug's Life doesn't bring much extra, because the story in which ants fight grasshoppers is actually not really fun. Without really strong moments of humor, manages to entertain fairly without really impressing anywhere.
