"BIG AS LIFE! MIGHTY AS THE SEA!"

Martin Eden, an aspiring writer, enlists on a merchant ship as a sailor. Tormented by the ship's sadistic captain, Eden survives the journey and is determined to write about the atrocities along the way. Despite opposition from the maritime authorities, Eden tries to bring the book to the attention of a publisher.
